Can you imagine it’s already February?! Where did the time go? Some of you might be raring to go, having already planned what you want to accomplish this year. But planning and goal-setting is not as easy as it looks and especially if you’re not a planner by nature, it can seem like quite an overwhelming task. Check out our fool-proof guide to goal-setting that will help get your life organised and make 2013 the most productive year so far!
Lists, Lists, Lists
You make lists for other things in your life such as grocery shopping or daily tasks to be done, so why not make one for your life and career?
Planning begins with knowing what you want. What is the one main thing you want to achieve this year? Write it down because listing a task down on paper makes you even more committed to completing it. It’s physically there in front of you to remind you every day.
When you have your goals listed down, it’s time to think about HOW to achieve them. What do you need to do to get started? Break your tasks down into steps and put deadlines to each. The key here is to give yourself reasonable targets and milestones so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Review your progress weekly and make changes to your strategy if necessary.
You know your end destination and have a plan. Now comes the harder part – making sure you keep to the plan. Discipline, discipline, discipline – we can’t emphasise how important that is. It is a quality all successful people have in common. As the saying goes, don’t leave till tomorrow, what you can do today. The key is to dedicate some time every day towards achieving your goal, no matter what. Even if you spend just an hour everyday working towards your goal, you are still closer than you were yesterday.
The Glass is Half Full, Not Half Empty
In your quest for success, there are going to be setbacks. Nothing good in life comes easy; you have to work hard every day. When you do encounter a setback, never give up. Did you know most failures happen because people think about how far they have yet to go, instead of focusing on how far they have come? A simple change in attitude and perspective can do wonders in spurring us on. So, let’s be positive! See every challenge as an opportunity to grow and learn something new!
The Power of Visualisation
V Council Member Khaled Obbeya from Team Faith swears by the power of visualisation. He talks more about it here, saying that “success is 90% visualisation, and just 10% effort.” What does he mean by visualisation? Khaled imagined his photo at the top of the QNET Achievers’ Club page and today his dream is a reality. What does your dream look like?
So in a nutshell, here is what you have to do to make 2013 another successful year: list your goals, apply discipline and dedication towards achieving them, maintain a positive attitude, and visualise your success!
And before you know it, if you have followed these simple steps and stuck to your plan, you will feel like you’re on top of the world, having achieved your goals! Remember, your destiny lies in your hands, if you want something YOU have to make it happen! Good luck!
