As of this year, YouTube is the second most popular social platform worldwide, topped only by Facebook. We already know that it is a rich resource not only for entertainment, but especially for education, so here are several tips to help you make the most out of your daily YouTube experience.

1. Load videos faster.

YouTube’s Feather Beta feature is dedicated to users who want to run videos on a very slow internet connection. The system basically cuts down some bytes that limit the speed of video streaming in your browser.

2. Start a video from a specific point.

You can link to a specific start time in a video by adding #t= to the end of the video URL, followed by the minute you want (with an m) and then the second (with an s). An example would be typing #t=01m18s at the end of the video URL in order to make it start playing at 1:18 into the video. You can also just pause the video at the desired point, right-click on the video, and choose copy video URL at current time. Both of these methods work for embedding videos as well.

3. Play a video on loop.

If you want to keep playing a video on loop, just add the word repeat after youtube in the video URL (i.e. www.youtuberepeat.com/watch?v=SPzgkLEti1I) to let the video automatically replay. When embedding videos, add &loop=1 at the end of the video URL in your embed code to make the video start again without user intervention after it reaches the end.

4. Play videos in high definition.

YouTube gives you the option to switch to high definition for some videos, and you can check whether an HD version is available for a particular video by adding &fmt=18 (stereo, 480 x 270 resolution) or &fmt=22 (stereo, 1280 x 720 resolution) to the video URL.

You can also force the system to permanently play videos in HD format by grabbing the extension called Magic Actions for YouTube available for Google Chrome and Firefox. You can enable the Auto HD option in the extension and select the video resolution you would like to be played automatically.

5. Get more accurate keyword search results.

You can opt to include or exclude specific keywords in your search by (a) typing allintitle: before your keywords to show only videos that have all of the keywords in the title, and (b) placing a “-“ before a word that you want to be excluded from the search.

6. Browse YouTube using only your keyboard.

The Leanback feature lets you experience YouTube without having to click on a single button on the screen with your mouse or touchpad. Instead, you can browse through and watch videos that have been tailored to your tastes by simply shifting through the tiles on your keyboard.

 7. Create and edit videos directly on YouTube.

YouTube has a built-in Editor that allows you to crop your videos and add effects and transitions to them as needed on your timeline. You can even choose from YouTube’s library of pre-approved songs to add to your video legally. Meanwhile, the Create feature lets you create animated videos without the need to shoot content with your camera or upload files.

8. Manage video traffic.

You can create links to other videos, playlists, and channels by inserting Annotations in your video so you can drive traffic to them.  And if you don’t want people to see other content that may be related but might be in competition to yours, just add &rel=0 to the end of the URL part of the embed code to turn off related video suggestions.

9. Address language barriers.

Your video might have viewers who may be hard of hearing, speak a different language, or can’t turn the sound up at work. You can address these issues by making captions and subtitles available to them.

10. Customise the ads you see.

There is currently no way of getting rid of YouTube ads for free, but by going to Ad Preferences, you would be able to customise which types of ads you are okay with being exposed to based on your interests.
