If you’re planning on gracing the shores of Malaysia soon, here are 10 awesome things you should do in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

  1. Visit QI Tower

The 15-storey QI Tower owned by the QI Group in Malaysia has won the much coveted Green Mark Gold award for Non-Residential Existing Building. Situated at PJ 8, Petaling Jaya, it is the first Green Mark high-rise office building in Malaysia to receive this prestigious accolade in recognition of the building’s best practices in environmental design and performance.

  1. Discover great finds at Junk Bookstore

It’s one of KL’s longest-running second-hand book stores, and packed to the brim with literary gems, comics and LPs. You’ll have to scrabble a bit (books are arranged loosely by genre), but it’s worth putting in the hours as books start from a couple of ringgit each.

  1. Be awed by the architectural beauty of Masjid Negara

It’s the National Mosque of Malaysia. Its architects decided to break away from traditional dome tops and instead give Masjid Negara a 16-pointed star concrete roof resembling an open umbrella, complemented by a 73-metre-high minaret symbolic of a folded umbrella. Its modern façade was strangely never repeated in the construction of other major mosques here, making Masjid Negara a one-of-a-kind gem.

  1. Get up close and personal with the cuties of Aquaria KLCC

Billed as an ocean of discovery in the heart of the city, Aquaria KLCC features some 5,000 aquatic and marine animals and exhibitions. Key features include the living sea exhibit and a diving with sharks programme.

  1. Cool down at Aku Café & Gallery

This pre-war Old China Café is a bit like your nana’s house meets hip coffee shop with wooden chairs, mahogany coffee tables and a stand fan. This new joint lets you enjoy a well-crafted cuppa and relish beautiful art at the same time.

  1. Fill yourself to the brim at Fierce Curry House (Bangsar)

Not only will their solid wooden tables and hand painted mirrors get you reminiscing about the good old times, but their Northern Indian home style cuisine will, too. Conveniently located just a 5-minute walk down the road from the Bangsar LRT station, their signature dish is the Hyderabad Biryani Dhum.

  1. Shop till you drop in Masjid India

More of an ‘area’ rather than just a street, Masjid India, named after the iconic mosque is brimming with life. The street is made up of a colourful mix of shops (selling souvenirs, textile and accessories), money changers, goldsmiths, and most importantly, Indian restaurants.

  1. Delight the kid in you at Carousel (Publika Shopping Gallery)

A vintage London-style toy store with giant window displays and a couple of life-sized Nutcracker figurines at the entrance, will leave you awe struck. The welcome appearance of model airplanes, jack-in-a-box, rocking horses and toy soldiers, among other playthings from a bygone era, elevates this vibrant red-and-white shop beyond the ubiquitous toy chains in town.

  1. Enjoy Jazz music at No Black Tie (Bukit Bintang)

Despite having had to close its doors for a while in 2004, the city’s best jazz venue is now a firm favourite on the city scene as an entertainment hotspot. Mostly jazz sets are on offer, but No Black Tie has also hosted international poetry readings and readings by local writers.
