One of the most exciting matches in the AFC Champion’s League happened this week in Doha, Qatar as host Al Gharafa faced their long-time rival, Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal at the Al Gharafa Stadium.

Having beaten Al Gharafa 3-0 in the first leg of the Quarter Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia just last week, two-time ACL champion Al Hilal expected to comfortably cruise through to the semi-finals. But Al Gharafa proved to be tough opponents, showing Al Hilal during Leg 2 of the Quarter Finals that it wouldn’t be such an easy path into the next round!

Right after the whistle was blown, Al Gharafa played an aggressive, determined game, and their skillful efforts didn’t go unnoticed as they sealed the first half with a 3-0 lead.

Al Hilal tried to make a comeback in the second half, but Al Gharafa kept their attacks at bay with some enthusiastic defending. With neither team being able to score any goals in the second half, the game ended with a 3-0 victory for the home team during the 90-minute game. Now they were tied, as Al Hilal had won against Al Gharafa in Leg 1, with both teams achieving three goals each in the Quarter Finals – which meant they were tied with exact point scores for the Quarter Finals! Last week in Leg 1, Al Hilal won that match 3-0. The tied status resulted in a show down of 30 minutes’ extended time for the teams to continue to do battle in their spectacular rivalry!

After 12 minutes, Al Gharafa sent the stadium into a frenzy as they scored the fourth – and what seemed to be the winning – goal. But Al Hilal crushed the Qatari team’s hope when they scored two goals in the last minutes of the game. The final score read 4-2 in favour of Al Gharafa, but it was Al Hilal who moved on to the Semi Finals with their better aggregate score of 4-5.

QNet Managing Director Mr JR Mayer, The V Managing Director Mr Pathman Senathirajah and more than 250 IRs attended the match and enjoyed the intense game.  “Football never fails to unite people all over the world,” Mr Mayer explained. “And no matter what the final results are, it is the fans and supporters of the game who always win because of the excitement.”

As an official sponsor of the AFC Champion’s league, QNet is proud to be a part of this prestigious tournament and hopes that the ever-surging popularity of football in the region will help improve and promote the Asian football standard.
