5 Ways to Help Save the Environment: Recycle More, Waste Less
It’s time to give Mother Earth the much-needed love it deserves. It’s time to help save the environment!.
The year is 2019. Modern times, yes, but we’re still not as environmentally-sensitive as we are supposed to be. Evidence of climate change and global warming has been prevalent, but the need for action remains great.
The time has come to be more conscious of our choices and develop habits that can help us protect and improve the world we live in. Join the green side by actively doing these four simple yet collectively impactful things:
- Bring a reusable cup to your favourite coffee shop.
You might need that cup of joe to survive your day, but you — and the Earth at that — don’t need to a disposable cup to do so. Most cups used in cafes are not biodegradable, and recycling them consumes a lot of energy. And we haven’t even talked about what happens to the cups that are not disposed properly and how they affect the soil where our plants (yes, including coffee trees!) grow.
Enjoy your next cuppa in your favourite tumbler or mug. Make your mornings even brighter, knowing that you helped make sure that there’s enough coffee to go around for a long, long time.
- Refuse that plastic straw, too!
This drink accessory may be so little, but the problems it brings have always been so big. They are used only once and then thrown away — all 500 million of them in the US alone. Plastic straws are too small and light to be recycled. And the worst part? Using them has been too common and too habitual, we don’t notice it anymore at all!
The trick is to be more aware when around beverages. There are plenty of drinks that do not need straws. And if there is a need to use one, consider the available alternatives: metal straws, bamboo straws and even straws made from grass are now available in the market.
- Replace single-use plastic bags with organic cotton bags when doing your shopping.
Aside from using the plastic straws, using plastic when we’re at the grocery or the market is also something that we mindlessly do. It has been something we’ve been doing this for years, after all. But just avoiding plastic straws, we also have other options we can explore.
An organic cotton bag is not only more stylish, it’s also more economical. It can be reused at least 20,000 times. Imagine the number of plastic bags you don’t need– and the amount of money you’d save when you go for this alternative!
- Teach kids how to recycle.
In so many ways, recycling isn’t very complicated. In fact, it can actually be a bit…fun for many. All it takes is the proper language and enough patience to explain what it is, how it is done and why it is important.
Let kids discover the fun of separating trash by turning it into a game. Not only do they learn about proper waste segregation, they also develop confidence, fine motor skills and critical thinking skills.
- Be responsible with the plastic that you use.
There might be instances when using plastic is inevitable. But if there is no way to avoid it, be accountable to what happens to the plastic you have used afterwards.
Make sure it doesn’t end up in the ocean; there are already 8 million metric tonnes that do so each year. Make sure it doesn’t get incinerated; 80 percent of all seabird species have already ingested enough harmful fumes and toxic gases. Make sure they are disposed properly; more and more animals continuously ingest microplastics often enough to instill fear that we might have eaten these tiny bits of waste through our food as well.
It is true that undoing a force of habit is not as easy as it seems. But with the proper mindset and consciousness, it is not impossible.
After all, we owe it to the world to try.
At QNET, we have stopped use of all single-use plastic items in all offices world wide from Jan 2019. It’s a baby step towards making the world a better place, and moving forward, we are determined to do more.
QNET family, let’s do this together!
