Sustainability 101: How To Prepare For A Zero-Waste Lifestyle In 2020
Try to live a Zero-Waste lifestyle in 2020 – if you’re looking for a meaningful New Year’s resolution for 2020, this is it. And we know that it’s not going to happen overnight. So, we’ve put together a handy guide of everything you need to think about before you adopt a zero-waste lifestyle this coming year.
What Is The Zero-Waste Lifestyle?
Unlike what we see on the internet about people who only produce a jar of trash a year, a zero-waste lifestyle is a destination, a process. It’s mindfully picking a lifestyle that promotes environmental sustainability. It doesn’t mean that you decide overnight to go without life’s luxuries. It just means that you are more conscious of your choices as a consumer.
How To Prepare For A Zero-Waste Lifestyle
The problem with making a major lifestyle change happen immediately is that they don’t stick for very long. Remember when you promised you’d go to the gym every day as one of your resolutions? Instead of setting yourself up for failure, follow this simple guide and you’ll be ready to take the next steps towards living a zero-waste 2020.
1. Understand WHY You Want To Live This Lifestyle
Write down all the reasons why you’d want to try to live this sort of lifestyle in the new year. Whatever your reason – you’re tired of seeing trash in nature; you’re frustrated with our politicians not caring enough about climate change – have it written down somewhere as a constant reminder of your why.
2. Assess Your Waste
Go through your trash if you have to, and find out which area of your life creates the most waste. That will help give you an idea of what area you can focus on as a starting point.
3. Prioritise What’s Important To You
When you assess your waste, you will figure out where most of your trash comes from. If, for example, you find yourself throwing away a lot of takeaway containers, you’ll know to prioritise cooking at home, or investing in sustainable lunch boxes and coffee mugs. If you find the bulk of your trash is shampoo bottles and beauty products, you can research sustainably made products, or shops that refill your empty bottles or even trying out shampoo bars.
4. Replace Items As They Run Out
We’re all guilty of buying things to help you with your resolutions and then never using them (we’re looking at the dumbbells gathering dust in our houses). Just remember that you DO NOT need to buy every zero-waste alternative immediately. Unless you’re a billionaire with the free cash to overhaul your own life, focus on buying your alternatives only once your non-zero waste items run out. If you’ve bulk bought plastic razors, for example, use them till they run out and then plan to buy a longer-lasting one when that’s done.
5. Learn About How To Recycle, Donate, Sell Or Upcycle Your Old Items
Throwing things away sort of defeat the purpose of trying to be zero-waste. Find a way you can reuse, recycle, donate or sell them so they don’t end up in landfills.
This 2020, make the resolution to do your bit for our mother earth, and when you do, make sure you are prepared for the lifestyle change. Remember that massive changes like these don’t happen overnight, so mentally prepare yourself for it to be a process. Whatever happens, don’t give up. Keep at it, and find a support group. There are tonnes of zero-wasters out there waiting to help you. And while you’re at it, read the whole Sustainability 101 series.
