What is Diabetes?

High blood sugar problem is known as Diabetes and is, very simply, too much sugar in the blood – a chronic condition that, if left untreated or improperly managed, can result in a variety of complications including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye disease, and nerve damage. When sugar remains in the blood vessels for too long, it causes high levels of inflammation, which damages the body’s tissues and organs.

Insulin is the hormone that controls how our body metabolises sugar. When we eat, our digestion of food breaks down carbohydrates into glucose that is absorbed into the blood in the small intestine. Insulin moves the glucose from the blood into the body’s cell to produce energy. Diabetes happens when your pancreas does not make enough insulin or when your body is unable to use the insulin that is present, a condition called Insulin Resistance. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine reported that inflammation leads to Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes.

People with Type 2 diabetes usually also have high rates of cholesterol and triglyceride abnormalities, obesity, and high blood pressure, all of which are major contribution to higher rates of cardiovascular disease. Many people with diabetes have several of these conditions at the same time.

About 50% of diabetics have no symptoms, hence, it is also a silent killer. According to 1996 National Health and Morbidity Survey, approximately 150,000 Malaysians were walking around with undiagnosed diabetes. People with blood glucose levels that are higher than normal (between 7.8 mmol/L and 11.0 mmol/L) is considered as pre-diabetes & tend to develop diabetes eventually.

Drugs not a cure

Globally, the number of Diabetes and Pre-Diabetics is skyrocketing as countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa modernise. “None of the existing drugs cures anything. They merely slow down the progression of the disease” says Paul Herrling, head of corporate research for Novartis (Discover, Vol., 26, No.12, Dec 2005)
