As a show of support for professional marketing ethics in direct selling, and as an advocate for strong direct selling guidelines, QNET attended the highly anticipated launch of the new Ethics Council of the Direct Selling Association of Malaysia (DSAM). Our attendance was a pledge of support for the council in its goal to create a more conducive direct selling environment in the country, which in turn would translate into a positive global image.
Launched by Minister of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, the council consists of representatives from the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry, DSM, MCA’s Public Services and Complaints Department, Federation of Chinese Association Malaysia, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and legal firms.
In his speech, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said that many see the growing direct selling industry numbers an opportunity to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. “We should all work together, to achieve a zero scam industry in the country with the Ethics Council.”
Ethics Council chairman Datuk Tan Chong Guan, said the council will act as a whistle-blower and would investigate on fraud cases, the findings of which would be shared with Bank Negara and law enforcement agencies such as KPDNKK, SSM and police’s commercial crime unit. “The council will also identify illegal schemes through benchmarking against current laws, alerting relevant authorities and regulators for immediate action. When necessary, we will highlight the modus operandi of these illegal schemes through the media to inform the public,” he added.
DSAM president Frederick Ng said the setting up of Ethics Council Malaysia is timely to eradicate the enemies of ethical direct selling, namely opportunists who take on the role of get-rich-quick scheme providers. “DSAM has been handling a lot of complaints, the time has arrive to work with the society, associations, businesses, legal entities and the police, to put a stop to illegal practices that affect our industry.”
