Driven by concern over the increasing scarcity of Indonesian native fruits, on Saturday, 9 June 2012, QNET Indonesia staff planted a variety of rare fruit trees by the Ciliwung River, Condet, Cililitan, East Jakarta. The fruit trees planted include alkesa, mundu, rukem, bisbul, lampini, jamblang, menteng, bisbul, nam-nam, kemang, duku, kupa, matoa, walnuts, kecapi, buni and soursop, among others.
In cooperation with the Komunitas Pecinta Ciliwung (KCP, Ciliwung Care Community), Tanjungan and with assistance from Mr Dieny Asto, a conserver of rare fruit trees, this wonderful activity kicked off with an introduction of the KCP and its activities then continued with some practice in transplanting and grafting fruit trees.
KCP is a community focussed on the preservation of the Ciliwung River that divides the capital city from north and south districts. Local residents are taught about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and preserving the state of the river. Wita Dahlan, Corporate Communications Manager of QNet Indonesia, said, “We salute the various groups who show their care for Ciliwung and have been doing various activities for its cleanliness as well as conducting greening activities along the river. That was why we have chosen this location – it is like shooting two birds with one stone – preserving rare fruits and the Ciliwung River at once. We are really eager to see a clean Ciliwung that can be enjoyed by many. As a matter of fact, I am amazed to see that there is still some green part of the river… it does not feel like we are in Jakarta! Especially when we know very well that behind those trees there is a very dense residential area and crowded communities. Seeing those trees, we are happy that we are now contributing to this greenery, who knows someday this site will become an agro tourism spot for the Jakarta residents.” PR Executive Marlina added, “We also hope that our initiative in preserving rare tropical fruits will inspire others and therefore be followed by other groups or companies as well.”
It was indeed alarming to realise that majority of QNET Indonesia staff did not recognise the fruit trees mentioned by Dieny Asto. The names were completely unfamiliar!. However, all staff joined with enthusiasm in the tree-planting, making sure every last shoot was in place. Lead NSO Veronica, seemed very excited about planting buni trees and expressed hope to see them grow well and tall so they will invite wild birds to nest. Meanwhile, at the other end of the group dripping with perspiration, Yanti, a secretary, said, “Someday, I’m sure Ciliwung will become a means of water transportation for Jakarta city as an alternative to the ground transportation bottlenecks. I hope this site will then become a nice, green and shady transit point for the future water taxi passenger.”
