Watch Master Sebastien Rousseau On The Excellence Of Swiss Watches
Universally, Swiss made watches are considered the best in the world. They lead the watchmaking industry on the sheer quality, precision and performance of the timepieces. QNET had the unique opportunity to talk to Swiss Watch Master Sebastien Rousseau, a veteran in the design and manufacture of Swiss watches. You might have spotted him working at the CIMIER® booths at your previous V-Con. Here’s what he had to say about Swiss watchmaking.
Watchmaking has been steeped in Swiss history for more than 400 years. Swiss watchmakers have always been famed for their legendary skill and perfectionism.
The secrets of technical craftsmanship and the assembly of mechanical movements have been passed down through generations of watchmaking grandmasters who designed them with longevity in mind.
What’s A Swiss Watch?
The ‘Swiss made’ label, was created in 1880, to legally certify that a watch is of high quality and accuracy. For a watch to be correctly called “Swiss Made”, its movement, casing, and final inspection must be carried out on Swiss territory only.
Switzerland holds the score in manufacturing timepieces of outstanding quality, with roots from a tradition of unmatched excellence. Contenders from other nations fall short of obtaining such a reputation, as they lack the strict standards which the Swiss watchmakers abide by.
Tiny Hands Of Stone
The legendary Swiss movement is crafted with hard stones, like rubies to reduce friction. It may sound strange to those who are unaware, but this age-old technique is where the secret to the precise hand movement lies.
Metals are often used in hand movements. But when metal rubs upon metal, they harm the pivots and the watch’s durability. Hard stones however, last longer, making the movement flow much smoother with increased accuracy.
Oil is used to lubricate the stones to create a smooth flow of the hands, reducing the likelihood of it wearing off. The materials used in Swiss made timepieces are incredibly strong and resistant to corrosives. Meaning, they are least likely to tarnish when exposed to harsh climates and temperatures.
Another factor is that all the intricate pieces are assembled by hand. Metal components and pins are handcrafted with first grade materials, allowing the watch to stand the test of time.
It’s Worth The Bucks
As we know, Swiss watches are being manufactured by a variety of luxury brands. A high-end Swiss watch is of course, on the expensive side. But, since you are paying for the best timepiece available, you’ll be getting a good value for your money.
Quality aside, know that when you’re purchasing a Swiss timepiece, you’re getting more than a watch. You’re getting a long history of tradition and excellence. This is something worth taking pride of and passing down to future generations.
