The Fight Against Landmines: A Global Perspective

The Ottawa Convention, formally known as the “Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production, and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction,” is the cornerstone of the global movement to eliminate landmines. Adopted in 1997, the treaty has been ratified by 164 countries, including Cambodia, which has been at the forefront of advocating for mine clearance and victim assistance.

Despite these efforts, the challenge remains daunting. Millions of landmines still threaten lives in conflict-affected regions worldwide. The leadership of Cambodia, which chairs the 2024 Ottawa Convention Review Conference, is instrumental in keeping this issue on the global agenda.

A Powerful Call to Action Through the Cambodia Anti-Mining March

Cambodia hosted the March for a Mine-Free World on 24 November 2024, as a key part of the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on a Mine-Free World. The march brought together over 3,000 participants from around the globe, including representatives of 164 state parties, non-state actors, and local communities.

This four-kilometre march, starting at the iconic Angkor Wat Temple and concluding at the historic Elephant Terrace, served as a poignant reminder of the enduring harm caused by landmines. It was also a call to action, urging the international community to strengthen its commitment to eradicating these dangerous remnants of conflict.

QNET’s Longstanding Commitment to Cambodia

QNET has been committed to supporting communities in Cambodia since 2016 through our RYTHM Foundation. From partnering with the Cambodian Red Cross for disaster relief to sponsoring educational programs for underprivileged students, we’ve consistently worked to uplift those in need.

Landmines represent a significant barrier to progress in Cambodia. They not only endanger lives but also render vast areas of land unusable for agriculture and infrastructure development. QNET’s participation in the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit underscores our commitment to addressing these challenges. For QNET, this event is not just about sponsorship but also about contributing to tangible change.

As part of our sponsorship, QNET representatives attended the Welcome Dinner at the Bayon Temple, an event that brought together global leaders and advocates for mine action. Senior Minister H.E. Dr Ly Thuch, chair of the Ottawa Convention Review Conference, delivered a powerful message:

“This march symbolises our collective grief and commitment to ending the pain and suffering caused by landmines. We cannot take pride in a few hundred participants while millions of people are still suffering from the legacy of war and mines, despite the conflicts having ended decades ago.”

Speaking on QNET’s involvement, Jean François Huertas, Deputy CEO of QNET, shared:

“QNET is proud to stand with Cambodia and the global community in the fight to eradicate the suffering and destruction caused by antipersonnel mines. Through our social impact arm, RYTHM Foundation, we have been actively supporting Cambodian communities since 2016, beginning with our contribution to the Cambodian Red Cross. Additionally, we have sponsored the education of five underprivileged students, helping them pursue their ambitions and build a brighter future.

“As a global wellness and lifestyle company dedicated to empowering communities, QNET remains committed to advocating for meaningful, positive change. We believe that initiatives like the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit play a crucial role in fostering collaboration and driving progress towards a mine-free Cambodia and a mine-free world.”

These sentiments resonate deeply with QNET’s values. Our mission is not just to participate in events like this but to drive change by supporting initiatives that align with our vision for a better world.

A Future Free from Landmines

The Cambodia Anti-Mine March was a powerful moment in the global effort to eradicate landmines. For QNET, it was also a reminder of our responsibility to act as agents of positive change and uphold our legacy of RYTHM or Raise Yourself To Help Mankind.

Through our ongoing work, QNET is committed to empowering communities, addressing barriers to progress, and fostering sustainable development. Our support for the Siem Reap-Angkor Summit is just one example of how we translate our values into action.

As we march toward a brighter future, QNET invites you to join us in making a difference. Together, we can create a world where communities thrive, free from the scars of conflict and the shadow of landmines.
