What do you do with your plastics that have been lying around at home? While you could always try your hand at DIY Plastic Bottle recycling projects at home with your kids, and add them to your quality time activities, it’s not often possible. In this instalment of the QNET Sustainability 101 series, here are some realistic things you can do with your plastics, and some habits you can help encourage among your friends and family.

Dispose Of Plastic Properly

  • PREPARE YOUR PLASTICS

The best thing you can do with the plastic you do have or will likely adopt from your grocery haul is to dispose of it the right way. Remove the lids of your plastic bottles, jars and food containers. Remove all labels. Rinse them thoroughly so there’s no food waste leftover. Use hot water and a scrubber where you can. If you want to take it to the next level, check the back of your plastic container to see what number plastic they are made from, and sort according to their numbers.

  • GET IN TOUCH WITH A LOCAL RECYCLING FACILITY

Whether you have a garbage collector or not, it’s good to find out about a local recycling facility. Most cities have at least one such facility. Many have recycling drop-off points. Call them, find out their rules. The effort goes a huge way in making a difference to the world.

Encourage Recycling At Home And At Work

  • INVEST IN RECYCLING BINS

At home or your place of work, or even at events where you’re prospecting, install some recycling bins so that your family, friends and QNET family are not tempted to throw plastic with regular rubbish. If you want to do more, install a bin in every room you think plastic will be used.

  • DISCOURAGE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Replace plastic cups in your pantry, your kitchen or in your events, and opt for more sustainable options. Or better still, give away branded coffee mugs and bottled water that your prospects and friends can use instead. The same with any food you order, pick a caterer who will offer you food in recyclable or eco-friendly cutlery.

  • REFILL FLUID CONTAINERS

Some cities offer detergents and groceries that you can use your own containers to collect. If you invest in good containers, all you have to do is go refill them whenever you run out. If your city doesn’t offer you this option, buy refill packs instead of a brand-new bottle every single time.

  • BAN THE BAG

Carry a cute tote with you wherever you go so you don’t have to purchase plastic bags every time you go shopping. And if you forget, pick the packaging option that is non-plastic or at least reusable plastic.

Stay tuned to the Sustainability 101 Series to learn more about the ways in which you can help the environment and do you little bit whenever you can.
